The Bahamas, Monday, May 3, 2010 . Furniture Plus stores in Nassau and Grand Bahama ran a contest in April calling for essays or poems dedicated to mothers. Participants both young and old submitted their creative writing pieces online at www.furnitureplus.com for a chance to win over $1200 in prizes for their moms. An online ballot was provided so that visitors to the site could read the entries and vote for their favorites. On April 30th after all the entries were in and the votes were tallied, Ms. Sharmaine Fernander of Grand Bahama was the clear winner. Her daughter Oeshia Davis wrote the winning poem that stole the hearts of Bahamians... and also of her mother. "I can't believe Oeshia did this for me," said the delighted Ms. Fernander upon hearing the news. "She is adopted and it was very emotional for me to read what she had written, especially the part where she said that 'she had a choice to make.'" That section reads: My mom is the greatest mom in the world because she had a choice to make.
This single mother earned an additional endorsement from admirer John Carter, who submitted a few lines of his own to the website. "She has a lot of LOVE for children which makes her one of a kind," he wrote. "We are so very proud of all who participated, and I understand we had at least one writer as young as nine years old," said Mrs. Krystynia Lee d'Arville, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Furniture Plus. "Every mom is a winner in light of all the obvious love that went into each and every entry. We encourage everyone to visit our website and read the poems and essays submitted as they will remain online through May to honor and inspire moms everywhere." Ms. Fernander won prizes totaling over $1200, including a Kenmore washer and a linens accessories package that included towels and sheets. "It was such a pleasure to meet this inspiring person," said Mr. Scott Ferguson, General Manager for Furniture Plus in Grand Bahama. "We are happy to honor her as part of our year-long 'Believe' campaign and wish her all the best."
